Metotrexatul este principalul medicament antireumatic modificator administrat persoanelor cu artrită reumatoidă. Prin reducerea capacității sistemului imunitar de a produce celule care provoacă inflamații, acesta îmbunătăţeşte simptomele artritei și împiedicăîn timp, distrugerea articulațiilor afectate.
Stimulează, de asemenea, eliberarea de adenozină, o substanță chimică antiinflamatoare care se găsește în toate celulele umane. Din păcate provoacă efecte secundare deranjante, însă unele dintre acestea pot fi diminuate cu un supliment simplu de vitamina B9 acid folic.
Printre semnele bolii şi simptomele specifice regăsim articulaţii inflamate, calde şi dureroase spontan, rigiditate şi stare generală caracterizată prin oboseală şi uneori febră.
